Ripon Police Department Crime Prevention Programs

The Ripon Police Department is dedicated to informing and educating individuals in order to keep them from becoming victims of crime. By entering into a strong relationship with residents and visitors to Ripon we feel we can prevent crime from occurring rather than reacting to a criminal act after it has occurred.

Bicycle Safety- The department will do presentations on Bicycle Safety. Events include bicycle rodeos, which allow children to test their skills on a series of different events. At the rodeos bicycles are also inspected prior to participation.

Child Fingerprinting- When requested the Ripon Police Department will assist with "Child Safety" events that help to raise awareness of the dangers present in everyday life. The department offers Child Fingerprinting so that parents can have legible prints of their children at the disposal to help identify children if something should happen to them.

Citizen Observer on the World Wide WEB- The Ripon Police Department is pleased to announce a partnership with Citizen Observer. This site on the Internet is at www.citizenobserver.com.

The Ripon Police Department is easily located on the citizen observer site and provides crime and crime prevention information to city residents and city businesses.

Register yourself as a user on CitizenObserver! This is the first step in accessing all of the information your law enforcement agency has to offer.

Participating law enforcement agencies, including the Ripon PD, are able to send out instantaneous alerts to registered citizens and businesses to keep them informed about crimes and other incidents that impact them directly. Alerts can be sent via email, cell phone, pager, PDA or, for businesses only, fax.

Any questions, please call Mark Preissner at the Ripon PD, 748-5243.

Crime Prevention for Seniors- Presentations are designed to help seniors understand crimes targeting the senior population. The department provides information that our senior citizens can use to reduce the chances that they will become victims of criminal activity.

DARE- The Drug Abuse Resistance Program is presented at Ripon Public/Private Schools Kindergarten-sixth grade.

Gang Awareness- Presentations are designed to help attendee’s understand the gang culture and when gang activity is occurring in the community and what to do regarding gangs.

McGruff House- This is a program that provides a safe place for children to go in case of an emergency when they are on their way home from school or outside for other purposes. A McGruff house sign is issued to residents that request to be involved in the program. A criminal background check is done on each applicant prior to being issued a sign. There are strict guidelines issued to both children and residents to make sure that the McGruff Houses are used as intended.

Personal Safety- Presentations are provided in a group setting providing information about how to avoid becoming an assault victim. Included is how to reduce the chances of being robbed or assaulted. We discuss reducing the opportunity for assault to occur along with what to do if assaulted. This includes the use of pepper spray.

Protective Behaviors- The Ripon Police Department provides an educational curriculum to students Kindergarten-fifth grade in the Ripon Public/Private Schools concerning various cases of child abuse.

Scams and Fraud Detection- This program is designed to help people understand the frauds and scams that are occurring on a frequent basis. People are given tips to reduce the chance that they will become a victim. Some of the areas covered are telemarketing, construction fraud, and "prizes".

Security Surveys- The Ripon Police Department will provide a trained Crime Prevention Officer to inspect both business and residential property within the City of Ripon. Our Officer will be looking for areas that could be upgraded and improved to help reduce the opportunity for crime to occur. Some of the areas that are inspected are doors, windows, locks, lighting and any other concerns that the property owner may have.

Shoplifting Prevention Seminars- The Ripon Police Department can be inspected to determine if there are any areas of the business that could be improved to reduce the opportunity for shoplifting. Presentations to employees of businesses are designed to improve shoplifting detection techniques.

Vacation Checks- Vacation checks are a service we offer. Simply stop by the department and fill out a short form. Auxiliary officers will check your house periodically until you return home.
